ACMA pushes for major block on thepokies.net

The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) has instructed local internet service providers (ISPs) to block access to thepokies.net, calling it one of the most “notable” blocking actions so far.

An ACMA review revealed the site was offering online casino-style games, which are banned under the Interactive Gambling Act 2001, rendering the platform unlawful.

With estimated payments to the site reaching tens of millions of dollars and Similarweb showing about 30,000 monthly visits from Australians, ACMA said this block would be among the most prominent since it started applying this tool in November 2019.

“We have received more complaints about thepokies.net this year than any other illegal gambling website, and it is clearly causing serious harm to Australians,” said ACMA chair Nerida O’Loughlin.

“Reports include players losing large sums of money to the site as well as refusals to return deposits and winnings. Blocking platforms like this shows that the ACMA is serious about stopping illegal operators from targeting locals.

“If one of these platforms keeps your money — and it happens regularly — there’s no way to get it back.”

Beyond site blocking, ACMA’s wider approach against illegal gambling covers engagement with industry, targeted enforcement and public awareness. Since 2017, more than 160 illegal providers have exited the Australian market under ACMA’s stricter offshore rules.

At the same time, the ACMA has also ordered ISPs to block additional platforms that it says were acting unlawfully in Australia.

Azure Hand, Abo Casino, Betroom, 777Bay, Space Lilly, Jet Casino, Katsu Bet and Winz were all named by the regulator as breaching gambling laws.
